Every week in junior high we do some type of craft. The goal is usually to have the craft have some type of sensory aspect. This might mean that we are finger painting or making fluffy penguins or making Mardi Gras mask with feathers. But the goal is to try to have that sensory input if possible while trying to support a learning theme. We do crafts at the orange table again to encourage social interactions, requesting materials from peers, exchanging ideas, and being able to be in a group setting. And though the activity is not academically demanding, it requires the students to follow directions, use fine motor skills, and engage in an activity structured activity for an extended period of time. It is nice to hear at the end of this work block that sense of pride our students' have when they ask if the can bring their project home to show mommy or hang it on the wall.
